Newport County have secured the services of Welsh midfielder Matt Smith, who has signed a two-year deal with the League Two club. The 25-year-old, who has 19 international caps, becomes the first signing under new manager David Hughes.

A Proven Track Record

Matt Smith has made over 160 club appearances in British football, including a successful stint at FC Twente. Last season, he played 25 times for St Johnstone, although the team was relegated from the Scottish Premiership. Smith became a free agent this summer after not featuring in St Johnstone's matches post-January.

Born in the Midlands, Smith qualifies for Wales through his Blackwood-born grandfather and made his senior international debut under Ryan Giggs in 2018. He was part of the Wales squads at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup but has not played for his country since September 2022.
