Who Will Joshua Face Next? Hearn Clears the Air on Fight Rumors
Eddie Hearn updates fans about Anthony Joshua's next fight options, quelling rumors of agreements with Bakole or Wilder.

Eddie Hearn, the promoter for Anthony Joshua, has dismissed recent social media speculation suggesting that Joshua has already agreed to fight either Martin Bakole or Deontay Wilder in his next bout. On the 5 Live Boxing podcast, Hearn confirmed that no discussions have taken place regarding Joshua's next opponent, defusing the buzz surrounding potential matchups.
Joshua, who currently holds a record of 32 fights with 28 victories and 4 losses, is coming off a disappointing knockout defeat to IBF champion Daniel Dubois last September. This has left fans anxious about his next move in the heavyweight division. Rumors swirled on Twitter, with claims that Joshua's next fight against Bakole was all signed, sealed, and delivered for June 7. However, Hearn clarified, "Neither of those fights has been formally discussed yet."
Martin Bakole has been vocal in pursuing a bout with Joshua, asserting that he managed to hurt the former two-time heavyweight world champion during a sparring session. However, Hearn humorously countered that assertion, stating that he has never seen Bakole actually shake Joshua during their training. "While Martin Bakole is a skilled fighter, let's not rush to label him as the next George Foreman. The financial aspect is a consideration, too, as Bakole does not yet attract the revenue a fight with Joshua would typically command."
The heavyweight landscape was further complicated following Tyson Fury's unexpected retirement announcement last month. Prior speculation suggested that Fury might face Joshua, which now appears increasingly unlikely. Nevertheless, Hearn emphasized that a matchup with Fury remains a top priority on Joshua's fight wishlist.
Hearn expressed, "The two names at the forefront are Tyson Fury—who remains retired—and the winner of the Dubois versus Parker fight scheduled for February 22. Joshua has relevant history with both fighters. He previously stripped Parker of his WBO title during their 2018 unification clash."
While Hearn acknowledges the unpredictable nature of boxing, he voiced skepticism about Dubois retaining the IBF title against Joseph Parker, who is currently on a five-fight winning streak, including notable victories over formidable opponents such as Wilder and Zhilei Zhang.
Hearn elaborated, "The first four or five rounds will be crucial. If Parker can withstand that early pressure, it could plant seeds of doubt in Dubois' mind. A confident Daniel Dubois is certainly a fierce adversary, but he is also beatable—and Parker might just be the one to prove it."
As fans await clarity on Anthony Joshua's next steps, Hunt's insights reinforce the unpredictable and thrilling nature of heavyweight boxing. The boxing world remains eager to see not only who Joshua will face next but also how the latest developments will shift the dynamics in the heavyweight division.
