Michael Smith's Ongoing Battle with Arthritis: A Champion's Resilience
Former world champion Michael Smith reveals his struggle with arthritis and shoulder injuries but vows to return stronger.

A Champion's Struggle
Former world champion Michael Smith, known as 'Bully Boy', has opened up about his struggle with arthritis in his right hand, a condition that stems from injuries he sustained early in his career. At just 19 years old, Smith fractured both wrists, and years later, the consequences of those injuries have caught up with him.
After a disappointing exit in the World Masters where he was knocked out by Dutch dart player Danny Noppert, Smith shared his thoughts, stating:
"I broke both my wrists when I was 19, and now it’s catching up with me. I’m suffering with arthritis in my right hand."
He emphasized that he wasn't seeking sympathy, stating,
"This isn’t a cry for help. I’ve never given up or stopped despite any pain."
Despite achieving remarkable heights in his career, including winning the World Championship in 2023, Smith's performance has recently waned, and he now sits at number 16 in the world rankings. In addition to arthritis, he has also been hampered by a shoulder injury, requiring physiotherapy every few days for the last six weeks.
The Road Ahead
"I see the specialist on Monday and when I know more, you will too. I promise I’ll be back very, very quickly," Smith affirmed, showcasing the determination that has defined his career.
Competitors Stepping Up
Meanwhile, other competitors are also making waves in the tournament. Defending champion Stephen Bunting managed to scrape through a tight match against qualifier William Borland, demonstrating impressive form following his World Championship semi-final appearance. Bunting, currently rated number five in the world, is set to face Peter Wright next.
Additionally, William O’Connor stunned everyone with a 3-1 victory over 2018 world champion Rob Cross, showcasing the unpredictable nature of the darts scene.
Number one ranked player Luke Humphries dispatched 2022 Masters winner Joe Cullen with a 3-1 score, while the young star Luke Littler, who recently made history as the youngest world champion at just 17, will kick off his Masters campaign against Andy Baetens on Friday.
As the season progresses, fans and players alike will be keeping a close eye on Smith’s recovery and return to form, while the drama of darts continues to unfold.
