France's Rising Stars Shine in Euro 2025: A New Era in Women's Football
Discover how France's young talents, Thiniba Samoura and Alice Sombath, are making their mark in Euro 2025, stepping up in the absence of veteran Wendie Renard.

France's New Defensive Powerhouses
When Wendie Renard was omitted from the France squad for Euro 2025, it raised eyebrows across the women's football world. Renard, a stalwart with 168 international caps and a decorated career at Lyon, was seen as indispensable. However, France's manager Laurent Bonadei had a different vision, opting for a younger defensive lineup that has since proven its mettle.
Emerging Talents
Thiniba Samoura and Alice Sombath, both 21, have seized their opportunities in Renard's absence. Sombath, in particular, has been a revelation. Her commanding presence was pivotal in France's 2-1 victory over defending champions England. "Sombath was incredible against England. She's very young but she's very calm, she's a leader and she's the future of the French team," noted French football reporter Morgane Huguen.
Samoura, versatile and technically gifted, has also impressed. "She can take the ball from the back and break some lines, and she's not afraid of taking some risks with the ball at her feet," added Syanie Dalmat, a reporter for L'Equipe.
The Quarter-Final Dilemma
With Griedge Mbock and Maelle Lakrar returning from injuries, Bonadei faces a tough decision for the quarter-final against Germany. "Against a team like that, France will need some experience," Dalmat remarked. "Even if I think Samoura and Sombath have done well, Mbock and Lakrar have much, much more experience, and in a game like this, experience is crucial."
Germany's Defensive Woes
Meanwhile, Germany's defensive troubles have compounded their challenges. The loss of captain Giulia Gwinn to a knee injury and the suspension of Carlotta Wamser have left manager Christian Wuck scrambling for solutions. "She's very quick with her left foot, she has incredibly good will and she's able to defeat people in duels," Wuck said of potential replacement Franziska Kett.
Looking Ahead
As France and Germany prepare to clash in the quarter-finals, the spotlight will be on these emerging stars and seasoned veterans. Will France's youthful exuberance triumph, or will Germany's experience prevail? The stage is set for a thrilling encounter in Basel.
