West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell has decided to hang up his international cricket boots following the first two matches of the upcoming T20 series against Australia. Known for his explosive batting and effective seam bowling, Russell will play his final international games at Sabina Park in Jamaica, his home ground.
Career Highlights
Russell's international career spans 141 matches, including 1 Test, 56 ODIs, and 84 T20s. He was instrumental in West Indies' victories at the T20 World Cup in 2012 and 2016. Over the years, he amassed 2,114 runs, including 157 fours and 147 sixes, and took 132 wickets.
Retirement Statement
"I want to finish my international career on a high while being a role model for the next generation of cricketers coming out of the Caribbean," said Russell. The 37-year-old has been a dominant force in the T20 format since 2019 and retires just under a year before the 2026 World Cup.
Legacy and Future
Cricket West Indies has confirmed that Russell has been "selected on merit" for his final two appearances. "Words cannot explain what it meant. To represent the West Indies has been one of the proudest achievements in my life," Russell added. He remains a fixture on the T20 franchise circuit, having played 561 games worldwide.
Upcoming Matches
The farewell matches at Sabina Park are scheduled for 20 and 22 July, followed by three more fixtures in St Kitts and Nevis, concluding on 28 July.
