Rally legend Carlos Sainz has announced his decision not to pursue the presidency of the FIA, the governing body of motorsport, in the upcoming December election. The 63-year-old, who had previously considered the role, cited that 'the present circumstances are not ideal to set the grounds for my candidacy.'

In a statement shared on social media, Sainz expressed his belief that the FIA 'still needs important changes,' which he remains hopeful will be addressed in the near future. He emphasized that a presidential campaign would significantly interfere with his preparations for the 2025 Dakar Rally, where he aims to compete with Ford in Saudi Arabia.

Sainz, a four-time Dakar Rally champion, stated, 'I have realized that properly running for president would notably compromise my preparation for the Dakar and I do not wish to weaken my commitment to Ford and my team.' This decision reflects his dedication to his racing career and his team's objectives.

The current FIA president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, remains the only declared candidate for the election. His tenure has been marked by controversies, including changes to FIA statutes that appear to extend his control, the dismissal of senior FIA figures, and his involvement in situations that have upset many in Formula 1, including Liberty Media and the drivers.

Additionally, the FIA is currently facing a lawsuit from Susie Wolff, the head of the F1 Academy and wife of Mercedes motorsport head Toto Wolff. This legal challenge adds another layer of complexity to the FIA's current leadership situation.

Sainz's son, also named Carlos Sainz, is a driver for Williams in Formula 1, highlighting the family's deep roots in motorsport. Sainz Sr.'s decision to step back from the FIA presidency race underscores his commitment to his racing career and his team, ensuring he remains focused on his goals in the Dakar Rally.
