Oscar Onley Triumphs in Stage Five of Tour de Suisse with Stunning Uphill Sprint

Oscar Onley clinches victory in stage five of the Tour de Suisse with a remarkable uphill sprint, marking a significant milestone in his cycling career.

Oscar Onley, the young British cyclist from Picnic PostNL, delivered an outstanding performance in the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse, securing a victory in an uphill sprint finish. The 22-year-old edged out Joao Almeida of UAE Team Emirates XRG on the challenging 183.5 km mountainous route from La Punt to Sant Maria. Felix Gall from Decathlon–AG2R La Mondiale came in third, trailing by 23 seconds.

Kevin Vauquelin of Arkea–B&B Hotels finished fourth, taking the overall lead from Romain Gregoire, who was more than six minutes behind Onley. Vauquelin now leads fellow Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe by 29 seconds, with Almeida in third and Onley in fourth, 1 minute 21 seconds off the lead.

"I felt good and just gave it a go on the last climb," said Onley, who hails from Kelso. "I don't win often and I've had quite a few podiums so far this year, or quite close results, so to pull it off today is really nice for myself and my team-mates, because they do a really good job every day. Today was no different. It's nice to be able to pay them back now and again."

This victory marks the biggest win of Onley's career to date. The stage was held in memory of Gino Mader, who tragically passed away at the age of 26 after a crash in the 2023 race. A statue was unveiled near the Albula Pass, the site of the accident.

Stage six of the eight-day race features a 186.7 km flat route from Chur to Neuhausen am Rheinfall.
