SPFL Advocates for Enhanced Football Banning Orders to Ensure Match Safety
The SPFL calls for stricter football banning orders to address unsafe fan behavior, emphasizing the need for safety at matches.

The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) has emphasized the necessity of increased football banning orders to combat what it describes as 'unacceptable' conduct during matches. In a recent statement, the league highlighted the 'dangerous, irresponsible, and selfish behavior' exhibited by a minority of fans, particularly the use of smoke bombs and flares.
Key Concerns and Actions
The SPFL has identified the use of pyrotechnics as a significant safety concern and is seeking more robust discussions with Police Scotland and the Scottish government to effectively address this issue. The league has also confirmed that Celtic, Aberdeen, and Partick Thistle will face penalties due to their fans' use of pyrotechnics near the end of the 2024-25 season.
SFA's Stance on Pyrotechnics
Ian Maxwell, Chief Executive of the Scottish FA, has expressed his desire to avoid banning supporters for using pyrotechnics. 'You would absolutely never want to get to that stage, and we need to look at the steps that we can take to avoid that,' Maxwell stated in an interview with BBC Sport Scotland.
Attendance and Fan Support
Despite these challenges, the SPFL reported a rise in match attendance for the third consecutive season, with crowds across all leagues, cups, and play-off matches totaling over 5.3 million—an increase of nearly 185,000 from the previous season. The league extended its gratitude to fans for their 'incredible support.'
Future Plans
The SPFL plans to hold further meetings with key stakeholders during the summer to review the past season and prepare for 2025-26. The league remains committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable matchday experience for both players and supporters, recognizing them as the lifeblood of the sport.
