Irish Kickers McNamee and Bolger Dream Big at NFL Pro Day
Irish kickers Mark McNamee and Ross Bolger aim to impress NFL scouts at Pro Day, following in the footsteps of recent Irish NFL success stories.

Rising Irish Stars Chase NFL Dreams
History could repeat itself as two more Irish kickers, Mark McNamee and Ross Bolger, prepare for their NFL Pro Day audition on 26 March. With scouts from all 32 teams watching, they hope to join fellow Irishmen Charlie Smyth (New Orleans Saints) and Jude McAtamney (New York Giants) in the league.
Breaking the 37-Year Drought
Until 2024, no Irish-born kicker had played in the NFL since Neil O'Donoghue in 1987. Smyth and McAtamney shattered that streak—now McNamee (ex-Gaelic football goalkeeper) and Bolger (Idaho State college standout) aim to double Ireland’s NFL presence.
NFL Combine Success
At the recent NFL Combine in Indianapolis, both impressed:
- McNamee nailed all but one kick.
- Bolger hit 12/14 attempts.
"We wanted to flash our talent—show we belong here," McNamee said, emphasizing technique over stats.
The Underdog Edge
As international recruits, they embrace the challenge:
- "You’re definitely an underdog," admits Bolger. "But outperforming American kickers? That’s when scouts take notice."
From Gaelic to Gridiron
Transitioning from Gaelic football’s round ball to the NFL’s tapered shape required adjustments:
- McNamee compared it to refining a golf swing, targeting a higher "sweet spot."
- Bolger credits college weight training for added distance: "It’s not just curls—heavy squats changed everything."
Inspired by Trailblazers
Both draw motivation from Smyth and McAtamney:
- "Charlie proved it’s possible," McNamee said. "His confidence was infectious."
- Bolger cherishes his Idaho State experience, including kicking before 35,000 fans vs. Oregon State.
Pro Day Pressure
With the IPP program’s spotlight on them, their mantra is clear: "Master the technique, trust the process." As McNamee puts it: "Now it feels natural—like I’ve kicked this way for years."
