From Civil War to the Boxing Ring: The Inspiring Journey of Michael King
Discover the incredible story of Michael King, a London-based boxer who overcame the challenges of civil war in DR Congo to pursue his passion in the boxing ring.

Early Life in DR Congo
Michael King, also known as Michael Likalu, grew up in the Democratic Republic of Congo during a period of civil war. "I was eight when I started working. We were selling water, juices, basically anything we could get our hands on. When there's no other choice, that just feels normal," King recalls. His early life was marked by hardship and survival, laying the foundation for his resilience.
Moving to the UK
As a teenager, King and his family moved to the UK. Despite the cultural shift, King found himself drawn to boxing after watching Floyd Mayweather fight Conor McGregor. "I saw Floyd Mayweather fight Conor McGregor, read how much they were paid, and thought that's a good way to earn," he says. This pivotal moment inspired King to pursue boxing professionally.
Challenges and Determination
King's journey into boxing was fraught with challenges. He worked long hours at KFC but was eventually fired for "eating too much." This setback led to him living in his car and spending nights in A&E waiting rooms for warmth. Despite these hardships, King remained committed to his passion, making his professional debut in 2019 at York Hall.
Professional Career and Future Aspirations
King’s professional career has seen him fight primarily in the UK and Russia. "I had to go because nobody wanted to face me but I learned a lot," he says. Now training with Shane McGuigan, King is sparring with top fighters and aims for significant bouts. His ultimate dream is to fight back in Congo, bringing hope to his homeland.
Legacy and Motivation
Reflecting on his journey, King emphasizes his motivation to change his family's financial situation. "I want to change my family's financial situation," he says. His father, once skeptical of his career choice, now proudly shares King’s story in Congo. King’s resilience and determination continue to inspire both in and out of the ring.
