Scott Wiseman: The Dual Role of Managing Gibraltar's National Football Teams

Explore how Scott Wiseman balances managing both Gibraltar’s men’s and women’s national football teams, their upcoming World Cup qualifiers, and Nations League challenges.

Scott Wiseman’s Unique Challenge in Football Management

International football managers typically have fewer opportunities to prove themselves compared to club-level coaches. However, Scott Wiseman faces a unique challenge: managing both the Gibraltar men’s and women’s national teams simultaneously. At 39, Wiseman, a former Preston North End and Rochdale defender, has taken on dual roles with immense responsibility.

A Historic Appointment

Wiseman was appointed interim manager of the Gibraltar men’s team earlier this month following the resignation of Julio Cesar Ribas due to personal reasons. Simultaneously, he continues his role as head coach of the Gibraltar women’s team, a position he has held since 2023. His first game in charge of the men’s team is a World Cup qualifier against Montenegro on Saturday.

Balancing Dual Roles

With the men’s team set to face Montenegro and Czech Republic in their World Cup qualifying campaign and the women’s team scheduled to play Slovakia and Faroe Islands in the Nations League, Wiseman’s managerial skills are being put to the test. Despite the demanding schedule, Wiseman remains undaunted. “It’s no different than a coach working day in, day out in England,” he said. “Preparation for staff and coaches is very difficult, but this is no different in my eyes, except it’s two different national teams on different schedules.”

Building Foundations

Wiseman emphasizes the importance of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers as a foundation for the Gibraltar men’s team, particularly for their Nations League play-off against Latvia next year. “We’ve picked a very young squad,” he explained. “This campaign is about building the international experience the younger players need.”

Women’s Team Progress

The Gibraltar women’s team, under Wiseman’s guidance, recently made history by playing their first competitive international fixtures in the Nations League. Despite narrow defeats to Moldova and Faroe Islands, Wiseman remains optimistic. “We exceeded expectations massively,” he said. “The strides the women have made are fantastic.”

Future Uncertainties

While Wiseman is focused on the immediate challenges, his long-term future remains uncertain. “We haven’t discussed my role beyond these games,” he admitted. “This is something we’ll address after the international window.”

A Privilege and a Challenge

For Wiseman, managing two national teams is both a privilege and a challenge. “It’s fantastic to be given this opportunity,” he said. “My wife was hoping for a bit more ‘me time’ after I retired, but she’s very understanding.”

Wiseman’s journey from player to dual national team manager is a testament to his dedication and passion for football. As Gibraltar’s teams gear up for their respective campaigns, all eyes will be on Wiseman to lead them to success.
