Robbie Savage's Next Big Move: Departure from Macclesfield FC Imminent
Macclesfield FC owner Robert Smethurst hints at manager Robbie Savage's inevitable departure as he eyes higher leagues. Discover the future of the club.

Robbie Savage, the renowned football manager, is on the brink of an exciting new chapter as Macclesfield FC owner Robert Smethurst has signaled that his departure from the club is imminent. Savage, who has been at the helm since last summer, has significantly impacted the team, leading them to the top of the Northern Premier League Premier Division with a commanding 20-point lead over second-placed Worksop Town.
Smethurst, in a candid conversation with BBC Radio Manchester, expressed his awareness of Savage's ambitions. "How long he'll stay here at Macclesfield, God only knows," Smethurst remarked. "Maybe we'll be lucky enough to keep him for another year. He's already getting clubs coming for him now, higher up in the league."
Under Savage's leadership, Macclesfield FC has achieved two promotions in three seasons, just missing out on a third consecutive promotion last year after a heartbreaking defeat by Marine in the play-offs. Smethurst remains optimistic about the club's future, envisioning a potential rise to the English Football League, though he acknowledges the financial challenges of the National League.
"The ceiling for us is probably the English Football League," Smethurst added. "If we can get into the National League then that's maybe where we'll stay for a while. The amount of money you need to get out of that, if you look at the likes of Stockport County and Wrexham and what they had to spend, you're talking telephone numbers."
As Savage prepares to test his mettle at a higher level, the football world eagerly anticipates his next move. Macclesfield FC, on the verge of another promotion, faces a future filled with both promise and uncertainty.
