Urgent Call for Morecambe FC Sale: Culture Secretary Steps In
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy urges Morecambe FC owner Jason Whittingham to sell the club amidst suspension and financial turmoil.

The Culture Secretary, Lisa Nandy, has issued an open letter to Morecambe FC owner Jason Whittingham, pressing him to sell the club. This urgent plea comes after the club was suspended by the National League for non-compliance with league rules. The suspension has left the club's future hanging in the balance, with prospective buyers Panjab Warriors stating that the club will shut down on Monday without a takeover.
Nandy emphasized that while the incoming football regulator aims to prevent such crises, it won't be operational in time to aid Morecambe. "It is imperative that you act and get round the table to do so," she stated.
In a recent statement, Whittingham indicated that owners Bond Group Investments are ready to sell and have urged Panjab Warriors to make contact. The sports investment company, which has been in talks to purchase the club for over a year, confirmed they remain "ready, willing, and able" to take over.
Morecambe's suspension remains until the National League's compliance and licensing committee reconvenes on August 20. Despite the club's challenges, academy manager Neil Wainwright assured that the Shrimps' academy has not ceased operations but is merely "paused." Wainwright, a 17-year veteran at the club, noted that while other clubs have inquired about their youth players, the academy retains most registrations pending the committee's decision.
"We're pausing activities until the club is sold or we know what is going on," Wainwright explained. "Come August 20, that could be a different story completely. It's an academy pause rather than an academy close."
As the deadline looms, the football community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that will save Morecambe FC from closure.
