Iga Swiatek: Breaking Stereotypes and Facing Challenges in Tennis
Iga Swiatek opens up about the emotional challenges she faces on the court and addresses the recent ball boy incident in Indian Wells.

Iga Swiatek, the world number two in tennis, has recently found herself at the center of a media storm following an incident during her semi-final loss to Mirra Andreeva at Indian Wells. A video that went viral showed Swiatek appearing to hit a ball towards a ball boy, which led to widespread criticism on social media.
Swiatek addressed the incident in a lengthy social media post, expressing her regret and explaining the emotional toll it has taken on her. She wrote, 'I immediately apologised to the ball boy, we made eye contact, and nodded to each other when I expressed regret that it happened near him.' The five-time major champion also highlighted the unrealistic standards she faces regarding her behavior on the court.
'When I'm highly focused and don't show many emotions on court, I'm called a robot, my attitude labelled as inhuman,' Swiatek said. 'Now that I'm more expressive, showing feelings or struggling internally, I'm suddenly labelled immature or hysterical. That's not a healthy standard.'
Swiatek's year has been challenging, as she has not reached a final since her last title at the French Open in June. She also faced a one-month doping ban in August after testing positive for the heart medication trimetazidine (TMZ). The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) accepted that the test result was caused by contamination, but the incident led to her missing three tournaments and losing her world number one ranking to Aryna Sabalenka.
Despite these setbacks, Swiatek remains focused on her career and is determined to continue improving. She will be the second seed at the upcoming Miami Open, which begins on Tuesday. Swiatek's resilience and honesty about her struggles have garnered support from fans and fellow players alike, as she continues to navigate the pressures of professional tennis.
