From Street Football to Maradona's Son: Kevin Gonzalez Quintero's Journey to Redemption
Discover the inspiring journey of Kevin Gonzalez Quintero, from street football to a potential revival under Maradona Jr at UD Ibarra.

The Rise and Fall of a Prodigy
Kevin Gonzalez Quintero, known as 'Kego', was once a promising young talent who shared rooms with Jude Bellingham and played alongside stars like Jamal Musiala and Harvey Elliott. Born to Colombian parents who fled the drug cartels of Pablo Escobar's era, Kego found his footing in south London, where he joined Crystal Palace at the age of eight. His early years were marked by success, winning the academy player of the year and representing both England and Colombia at youth levels.
The Struggle for a Professional Contract
Despite his early promise, Kego's career took a downturn when he was released by Crystal Palace at 18. Over the next four years, he traveled across 14 countries, enduring failed trials and broken promises. "I thought I was going to have the world at my feet," Kego recalls. "But I got exposed to the real world, quickly." His journey was further complicated by his mother's illness, which required his constant support.
Street Football: A Path to Redemption
To stay in shape, Kego trained relentlessly in the concrete jungles of London, often playing with flat footballs or even tennis balls. "It almost felt like a prison cell," he says. Despite the challenges, Kego found solace in street football, where he built a reputation as a skilled player. His performances in cage tournaments and pick-up games earned him a deal with Puma and caught the attention of Spanish side UD Ibarra.
A New Dawn Under Maradona Jr
UD Ibarra, a fifth-tier team from Tenerife, recently appointed Diego Maradona Jr as their head coach. Kego sees this as a golden opportunity to revive his career. "He passed the ball to me and I said 'what, wait, [it's like] his dad is passing the ball to me'," Kego remembers. Maradona Jr is equally optimistic, praising Kego's speed, technical skills, and experience.
Looking Ahead
Kego is now focused on making his debut and helping UD Ibarra achieve promotion. "I was buzzing, excited, very emotional as well," he says. While his immediate goal is to excel at Ibarra, Kego dreams of becoming the best player in the world one day. His journey from the streets of London to the training grounds of Tenerife is a testament to his resilience and determination.
