John Hanlon's Racing Comeback: Hewick Set for Grand National Challenge
Irish trainer John Hanlon is ready to return to racing after suspension, with plans to enter Hewick in this year's Grand National instead of the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Irish trainer John 'Shark' Hanlon is gearing up for his return to the racing scene following a six-month suspension. Hanlon's license was restored on February 14, but due to a new Irish regulation requiring horses to be in training for 14 days before racing, he will officially make his comeback starting March 1.
Hanlon, known for his bold strategies and charismatic presence, has announced that his top horse, Hewick, the 2023 King George VI Chase winner, will bypass the Cheltenham Gold Cup this year in favor of the Grand National. This decision aligns with Hanlon's long-term plan for the 10-year-old gelding.
"I think we'll miss the Gold Cup; the National is the plan and has been for a while," Hanlon stated during a press briefing. He emphasized the strategic advantage of Hewick's current handicap weight.
The handicapper has adjusted Hewick's weight following his recent performances, setting him at 11st 7lb for the National. Hanlon views this as favorable, especially with the bottom weight potentially starting at 10st 10lb. This positioning ensures Hewick won't be overly burdened by weight comparisons.
"As long as we get good ground, that's the main thing," Hanlon added. "I'd rather go there fresh than be taking on Galopin Des Champs in the Gold Cup." This statement highlights Hanlon's focus on optimizing Hewick's condition and performance for one of the most prestigious events in the racing calendar.
Hanlon's return is highly anticipated in the racing community, not only for his expertise but also for the exciting potential of Hewick in the Grand National. Fans are eager to see if this seasoned trainer can lead his horse to another remarkable victory under challenging circumstances.
