Washington Capitals Unveil Plaque at Georgetown Fountain to Mark Iconic 2018 Stanley Cup Celebration
The Washington Capitals commemorate their 2018 Stanley Cup victory with a plaque at the Georgetown fountain, where Alex Ovechkin famously celebrated.

When the Washington Capitals clinched the Stanley Cup in 2018, their celebrations were legendary, spanning from the National Mall to a memorable swim in the Georgetown fountain. This Friday, the team will honor that iconic moment with the unveiling of a special plaque at the Washington Harbour fountain.
The Iconic Celebration
On June 9, 2018, Alex Ovechkin, along with teammates T.J. Oshie and Tom Wilson, celebrated their victory in grand style. After enjoying keg stands at a waterfront bar, they took an impromptu swim in the Washington Harbour fountain. Ovechkin, shirtless, joined his teammates in making 'snow angels' and dancing in the water with fans.
The Commemorative Plaque
The plaque, set to be placed on the fountain tower, will read: "Home of the 2017-18 Washington Capitals Fountain Celebration" and "In Vegas They Became Champions ... Here They Became Legends". This installation will serve as a permanent reminder of the team's historic triumph.
Ceremony Details
The unveiling ceremony will take place at the Washington Harbour Ice Rink on Friday, February 21, at 5 PM. Former players Nicklas Backstrom and T.J. Oshie, both currently on long-term injured reserve, will participate in the event.
Ovechkin’s Reflections
Alex Ovechkin has often recalled the fountain swim as the highlight of their celebration. 'We had a couple beers. Osh and Tom came to me like, 'Hey let's go swim in the fountains,' he reminisced. 'I said, 'OK, let's do it, we're champions.' There were policemen and we said, 'Hey, is it OK we're going to do it?' And they were like, 'You can do whatever you want, guys.' So I think it was a pretty fun moment for all of us and for you guys as well.'
This season marks the Capitals' 50th anniversary in the NHL, making this tribute even more significant as they honor their rich history and unforgettable moments.
