A New Chapter: Asha Francis's Bold Move to Coach France
Asha Francis navigates a challenging transition from Team Bath to the French national netball team amidst league changes.

Asha Francis, a celebrated figure in the netball world, faces a significant transition as she embarks on her new role as the head coach of the French national team. This summer has been particularly challenging for Francis, who spent years as a pivotal player and coach with Team Bath, leading the team to three Superleague titles in 2006, 2010, and 2013.
With the relaunch of the Netball Super League (NSL), Team Bath has unfortunately been omitted from the competition, which has undergone a significant reduction to eight teams, aiming for a professional status by 2025. Francis expressed her feelings regarding the team's exclusion, stating, "It's been a tough journey. Across the summer, I've had my ups and downs with it [Super League omission]."
Despite the disappointment, Francis is enthusiastic about her new journey with the French national team, aiming to prepare them as they strive for a spot in upcoming Netball World Cups. "We are incredibly grateful we still have the pathway so up to under-23s, Team Bath will still exist and hopefully still be contributing to the netballers of the future," she added.
When reflecting on her time with Team Bath, where she not only served as a player but also stepped into the head coach position in 2022, Francis remains hopeful. "Perhaps we needed to take stock, be outside of it for a bit, and watch what happens with the new era of the Super League because who knows what will happen."
Having previously taught French at the secondary level, Francis feels well-prepared to tackle any language barriers. Her unique background combines vintage netball experience with language skills, enhancing her coaching potential in a diverse team environment. "Because netball is limited to Commonwealth countries, a lot of what’s been started has been ex-pats living abroad in France," she explained.
Although she is moving forward with the French national team, she holds dear memories of her time at Team Bath. "If it's not going to be with Bath then I just thought this is a brilliant opportunity to keep my hand in the game. I mean, it's red, white, and blue - there’s still an element of blue in there."
In her new role, Francis is poised to make a significant impact in French netball, guiding the next generation of players, while cherishing the legacy of her past.
