Luke Littler Ignites a New Era in Youth Darts
The Darts Academy North East sees a surge in participation as young players inspired by Luke Littler join the sport.

A Surge in Youth Participation
Since Luke Littler emerged as the youngest-ever world champion at the PDC World Championship, enthusiasm for darts has surged among young players. The Darts Academy North East in Blyth, Northumberland, has experienced a remarkable increase in membership, skyrocketing from an average of 30 players to an impressive 50, with an additional 25 eager participants on the waiting list.
Chairman Simon Tate expressed the growing excitement: "Our young players are incredibly motivated and dedicated; they practice for hours on end!" This surge in interest is a testament to Littler's impact, as his achievements have illuminated a path for young, aspiring dart players. In 2024, he further solidified his reputation by reaching the finals again at just 16 years old.
Changing Perceptions of Darts
The transformation in the image of darts cannot be overlooked. "For years, darts were dismissed as a pastime dominated by overweight men in smoky pubs. Yet, through Luke, we've shown that young athletes can excel here," Simon said. The sport has evolved into a professional arena where serious competition exists, and players lead healthy lifestyles—many refrain from drinking and can earn significant amounts of money through their talent.
Local talent also shines brightly at the Darts Academy. Players like Callan Rdyz and Chris Dobey have had significant success, contributing to the growing allure of the sport. Their accessibility and approachability resonate well with budding players eager to learn.
Future Growth in the Community
Inspired by this wave of enthusiasm, Ryan Kent from Alnwick is exploring the establishment of a youth darts academy in his own community. "We've seen conversations flourish among young people regarding Luke Littler and their newfound interest in playing darts—which has even led to busier pubs," he stated, emphasizing the community's recognition of the sport's potential. Kent aims to provide a fun, nurturing environment for kids to engage with darts, hoping to foster growth in the sport locally.
As more children express an interest in darts, the future looks bright for the sport, driven by young talents like Luke Littler who continue to inspire the next generation of players.
