Jonny Bell Bids Farewell to Ulster: A New Journey Begins
Jonny Bell leaves his role as Ulster's defence coach after 30 impactful years to pursue new opportunities, reflecting on his storied career.

Jonny Bell, a stalwart figure in the world of rugby, has officially stepped down from his position as Ulster's defence coach in a decision mutually agreed upon to explore fresh career avenues outside the sport.
Having returned to Ulster in 2022, Bell's departure marks the end of an illustrious 30-year association with the Irish province, during which he played a pivotal role in their historic achievements, including clinching the European Cup in 1999 and the Celtic Cup in 2003. His impressive defensive strategies were instrumental in Ulster's success over the years, and his legacy will undoubtedly resonate within the club's rich history.
Beginning his coaching journey at Campbell College in Belfast, Bell transitioned to Ulster as an assistant coach after a fruitful stint as an elite development officer. His career highlights also include tenures at Gloucester Rugby, Glasgow Warriors, and Worcester Warriors, demonstrating his profound impact on various teams throughout his coaching career.
Though the current season has proven challenging for Ulster, with the team sitting ninth in the United Rugby Championship and having conceded a staggering 232 points in 10 matches, Bell’s contributions were greatly appreciated by both players and management alike. Bryn Cunningham, Ulster's general manager, announced that Willie Faloon, a former back row player, will assume a more prominent role to galvanize the team as they push through this tough period.
Expressing his gratitude in a heartfelt message, Bell reflected on the significant role Ulster has played in his life. "It has been an absolute privilege to represent and coach my home province," he stated. "The bond I've formed with dedicated players and staff will remain close to my heart. As I embrace this new chapter, my support for Ulster will never waver."
As fans wish Bell the best for his upcoming challenges, his commitment to the club and the sport remains a testament to his character and passion for rugby.
