Jack Leach's Stellar Performance Leads Somerset to Swift Victory Over Durham in County Championship
Jack Leach's remarkable 6-63 spell helped Somerset secure a swift five-wicket win over Durham in the County Championship Division One.

Jack Leach delivered an outstanding performance, taking 6-63 in Durham's second innings, as Somerset clinched a five-wicket victory over Durham in the County Championship Division One. The match concluded within two days at the Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton.
Durham, resuming their second innings at 5-2 and trailing by 100 runs, were bowled out for 190. Leach's second six-wicket haul in consecutive Championship games was complemented by Archie Vaughan's 4-85. Emilio Gay top-scored with 42, while Ben Raine contributed 36.
Somerset needed 86 to win, a target they achieved in 19.2 overs despite some tense moments. Tom Banton remained unbeaten on 33, and Callum Parkinson took 4-39. The turning pitch saw Somerset start the day with seam at both ends, with skipper Lewis Gregory and Craig Overton leading the attack.
Gay and Neil Wagner added 26 to the overnight score before Vaughan was introduced. Gay struck four boundaries in Vaughan's first over, signaling his intent. Wagner hit a six over long-off in Leach's first over, bringing up a half-century stand from 57 balls.
Durham's resistance faltered when Wagner fell lbw to Vaughan, and Gay was caught by Overton off Leach. Colin Ackermann and David Bedingham followed quickly, leaving Durham at 92-6.
Despite a 40-run partnership between Ollie Robinson and Graham Clark, Robinson was bowled by Vaughan for 28. Leach continued to dominate, claiming his fifth wicket when Clark edged to wicketkeeper James Rew.
Raine's aggressive approach saw him clear the ropes twice in a Vaughan over, but he was eventually caught at long-off. With 46 overs remaining, a two-day finish was inevitable.
Durham handed the new ball to Parkinson, who dismissed Josh Davey and Tom Kohler-Cadmore early. Rew narrowly escaped a catch off George Drissell, but Tom Lammonby eased the tension with two fours before being bowled by Parkinson for 22.
Rew and Tom Abell fell in quick succession, but Banton's effective use of the sweep and reverse-sweep guided Somerset to victory.
This win reinforces Somerset's strong position in the County Championship Division One, while Durham will need to regroup quickly for their upcoming matches.
