Revival of the Cosmos: A New Era in American Soccer
The iconic Cosmos football club is reborn, focusing on local talent and community values in New Jersey, marking a new chapter in American soccer history.

The legendary New York Cosmos, a name synonymous with football greats like Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, and Johan Cruyff, has been revived, albeit with a significant rebranding. The club has dropped 'New York' from its name and will now be based in Paterson, New Jersey, signaling a new chapter in its storied history.
A New Home in New Jersey
From 2026, the Cosmos men's team will compete in USL League One, the third tier of the United Soccer League, which operates independently of Major League Soccer. The club also plans to launch a women's team in the USL Super League by 2027. Matches will be held at the 7,800-seat Hinchliffe Stadium, a venue with a rich history, primarily used as a baseball ground in the past.
Leadership and Vision
North Jersey Pro Soccer, led by real estate developer Baye Adofo-Wilson, has acquired the intellectual property rights and a majority stake in the Cosmos from Fiorentina owner Rocco Commisso. Commisso, who retained a small stake, had effectively mothballed the club in 2021 after purchasing the Serie A club. Former Manchester United and Italy striker Giuseppe Rossi has been appointed as the Cosmos' vice-chairman and head of soccer, emphasizing the club's commitment to nurturing local talent.
Building a Legacy
Rather than relying on global stars, the new Cosmos aim to invest in the talent within their community. 'The real magic will be the players we develop right here in North Jersey,' Rossi stated at a launch event at Paterson City Hall. 'We're going to show what it means to be a Cosmo. The values, the style, the community - that's what draws people in.'
Historical Context
The original Cosmos won the North American Soccer League (NASL) five times between 1975 and 1984 before the league ceased due to financial issues. The club folded in 1985 but was revived in 2010, playing in a new NASL from 2011 to 2017 and winning the title three times. This latest revival marks a significant moment in American soccer, blending historical prestige with a forward-looking approach.
