Ffion Lewis Joins Chicago Lions: A New Chapter in Women's Rugby

Wales scrum-half Ffion Lewis signs with Chicago Lions, marking a new chapter in her rugby career after leaving the Welsh professional programme.

Wales scrum-half Ffion Lewis has officially signed with the Chicago Lions women's sevens team, marking a significant transition in her rugby career. Lewis, a former Bristol Bear, departed Wales' professional programme after being informed that her contract would not be renewed this summer. This decision came amidst her participation in the 2025 Women's Six Nations, where she chose to prioritize her mental health and explore new opportunities in the United States.

At 29 years old, Lewis has hinted that she is "closing the chapter" on her international career but remains passionate about the game, stating she is "nowhere near done with the game". Her career, which began with her debut in 2018, has seen her earn 33 caps. However, recent years have been challenging due to a serious knee injury and severe symptoms of endometriosis.

Lewis was among several senior players not retained by Wales' new head coach, Sean Lynn. Other notable players who became free agents in June include fly-half Niamh Terry, centre Meg Webb, and wing Carys Williams-Morris.

The Chicago Lions have a strong reputation in the United States, enjoying success at both Midwest and national levels. This move represents a fresh start for Lewis, who is eager to contribute to the team's continued success.

This transition highlights the evolving landscape of women's rugby, where players are increasingly seeking opportunities beyond their home countries to advance their careers and personal well-being.
