Historic Change: Names to Grace British and Irish Lions Jerseys for the First Time

The British and Irish Lions will feature player names on their jerseys for the first time during their upcoming tour of Australia, enhancing fan engagement and team identity.

A New Era for the British and Irish Lions

This summer marks a historic moment for the British and Irish Lions as they prepare to showcase player names on the backs of their jerseys for the first time in their storied history. This significant change comes as Andy Farrell's team gears up for a nine-game tour of Australia, starting with a match against Argentina at the Aviva Stadium on Friday evening.

Enhancing Fan Experience

The decision to add names to the iconic red jerseys was approved by the Lions board following consultations with both former and current players. This move is expected to make it easier for casual fans to identify players during matches and will also allow supporters to purchase replica shirts featuring their favorite players.

Following a Growing Trend

England was the first to adopt this practice during the Autumn Nations series of 2022, with Scotland quickly following suit. Ireland waited until a World Cup warm-up fixture against Italy in 2023, but by the 2024 Six Nations, all participating teams had embraced the change.

A Tour of Firsts

While the addition of names to the jerseys is a notable first for the Lions, another proposed change—the introduction of golden-point extra time—has been rejected. Rugby Australia had suggested this sudden-death method to avoid a repeat of the Lions' 2017 series draw against New Zealand. However, the Lions have decided against it, meaning any Test match tied after 80 minutes will end as a draw.
