Celtic FC Resolves 85% of Historic Sex Abuse Claims from Boys Club Scandal

Celtic FC has settled 85% of sex abuse claims linked to its historic Boys Club, with hopes to resolve the remaining cases soon.

Celtic FC has made significant progress in addressing the historic sex abuse claims associated with its former Boys Club. According to recent court proceedings, the club has settled 85% of the claims, with 24 out of 28 cases resolved through compensation payments. The remaining four cases are expected to be settled in the near future.

Legal Proceedings and Compensation

The Court of Session heard that Celtic's legal team, led by Ewen Campbell, is committed to bringing the remaining cases to a close. Campbell emphasized that prolonging these matters would not be in the club's best interests. Judge Lord Arthurson has scheduled a final hearing for September 2025, aiming to wrap up all outstanding issues.

Historical Context

The abuse was perpetrated by convicted paedophiles James Torbett and Frank Cairney at the Celtic Boys Club, which was not officially linked to Celtic FC. However, evidence presented in court revealed close connections between the two entities. The Boys Club used Celtic's training facilities, wore identical kits, and was often referred to as part of the Celtic family.

Legal Arguments

Ian Mackay KC, representing the victims, argued that Celtic FC exercised control over the Boys Club, making it vicariously liable for the assaults. This argument was pivotal in allowing the group proceedings to proceed, despite initial objections from Celtic's legal team.

Compensation and Closure

Earlier this year, Thompsons Solicitors, representing the victims, announced a seven-figure payout agreed upon by Celtic FC. Laura Connor, a partner at Thompsons, stated that the settlement confirms the inextricable link between Celtic FC and the Boys Club. Celtic FC has expressed deep regret for the events and reiterated its commitment to addressing the abuse seriously.

Future Steps

The remaining four cases involve individual issues that require separate attention. Celtic FC remains open to discussing these cases to ensure a fair resolution for all parties involved. The final hearing in September 2025 will mark the culmination of this long and complex legal battle.
