Liverpool is on the verge of completing a monumental transfer deal for Bayer Leverkusen's midfield maestro, Florian Wirtz. The Reds have submitted a third formal bid worth £100m guaranteed, with an additional £14m in add-ons, making it a potential £114m deal. This transfer would surpass Liverpool's previous record of £75m for Virgil van Dijk in 2018.
The Deal Structure
Sources close to the negotiations have revealed that the discussions are now focused on the final details of the transfer, including the structure of the add-ons and their achievability. Bayer Leverkusen had initially valued Wirtz at around £126m, but the two clubs are now inching closer to an agreement.
Wirtz's Career Highlights
Florian Wirtz, aged 22, has been a standout performer for Bayer Leverkusen since his debut at the age of 17. He has scored 57 goals in 197 appearances for the club and played a pivotal role in their historic Bundesliga victory in 2024. On the international stage, Wirtz has scored seven goals in 31 appearances for Germany since his national debut in 2021.
Why Liverpool?
Wirtz has expressed his desire to join Liverpool, despite interest from other top clubs like Manchester City and Bayern Munich. His arrival at Anfield would be a significant boost to Liverpool's midfield, bringing creativity, vision, and goal-scoring ability.
Record-Breaking Transfer
If the deal goes through, Wirtz will become the 10th player in football history to command a transfer fee of £100m or more. The British record for an initial fee remains Chelsea's £107m acquisition of Enzo Fernandez in 2023. However, Wirtz's fee could rise to £114m, making it one of the most expensive transfers in British football history.
What's Next for Liverpool?
Liverpool has already secured the services of full-back Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen this summer in a £34m deal. The addition of Wirtz would further strengthen their squad as they aim to compete for multiple trophies in the upcoming season.
