England netball legend Geva Mentor announces her retirement after a stellar 24-year career, expressing gratitude and excitement for the future.

England netball icon Geva Mentor has officially announced her retirement from the sport, marking the end of an illustrious 24-year career. The 40-year-old Leeds Rhinos defender revealed her decision as the current Super League season draws to a close, with just two matches remaining.
A Career to Remember
Mentor, who has been a cornerstone of English netball, shared her thoughts on retiring: "I'm very happy and content with my decision. The time is very right to retire. Last year I wasn't sure if I was ready, but after a couple of games this season, I knew it was right."
Transitioning to a New Chapter
Having spent 16 seasons playing in New Zealand and Australia, Mentor has accumulated over 310 club-level appearances. She was twice named the World's Best Netballer, a testament to her skill and dedication. "I've been able to play the season and be competitive, but I'm ready for the next chapter," she added. "I can stay at home a lot more and have less traveling. I'm ready for the next realm and to change my goals and perspectives on things."
Future Endeavors
Mentor, who is now based in France, has been actively involved with Netball France and is considering coaching roles. "I'm doing a lot of work with Netball France, and I could potentially continue to do that as well as coaching. I'm a big advocate for our sport and want to help push it forward," she said.
Final Games
Leeds Rhinos will face Cardiff Dragons in Sheffield on Sunday, followed by their final game against Nottingham Forest on 15 June. Despite a challenging season, Mentor remains optimistic: "We have two more games to go, and I'm excited for them. I just want to take to the court and perform and give my all in those final games. I want to end strong."
Gratitude and Reflection
Reflecting on her journey, Mentor expressed deep gratitude: "I'm feeling very grateful at the moment. It's been crazy to think where I've come from and the journey along the way. I've stayed true to my roots and remembered where I have come from, and that has kept me grounded and given me a sense of perspective all the way through."
Legacy
Mentor's retirement marks the end of an era, but her impact on the sport will undoubtedly continue. Her dedication to netball and her desire to see the sport grow will inspire future generations of players.
