Patrick Mahomes Steps Aside for Youth in Olympic Flag Football Debut
Patrick Mahomes opts out of Olympic flag football, paving the way for younger NFL stars to shine at LA 2028.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has decided not to participate in the flag football event at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Despite initial interest, the 29-year-old NFL star believes it's time to let younger players take the spotlight.
Mahomes' Decision
Mahomes, a two-time NFL MVP and three-time Super Bowl champion, expressed his thoughts during the Chiefs' off-season activities. "I'll probably leave that to the younger guys. I'll be a little older by the time that comes around," he said. Mahomes, who will be 33 during the LA Games, emphasized the importance of showcasing the NFL globally through this new Olympic sport.
NFL's Olympic Involvement
Last week, NFL team owners approved the participation of NFL players in flag football's Olympic debut. This decision opens the door for a potential 'Dream Team' reminiscent of the 1992 US men's basketball team. Each of the six qualifying nations can select one player per NFL team, allowing Team USA to potentially feature 10 players from 10 different teams.
The Future of Flag Football
Flag football at the LA 2028 Olympics will feature 10 players per team, with each nation limited to one player per NFL team. This structure ensures a diverse and competitive field, highlighting the sport's growing popularity and its appeal to a younger generation of athletes.
