Remembering Lachie Stewart: The Legacy of a Scottish Athletics Icon

Celebrating the life and achievements of Lachie Stewart, a Scottish distance running legend who won gold at the 1970 Commonwealth Games.

Scottish distance runner Lachie Stewart, a celebrated athlete who brought pride to his nation, has passed away at the age of 81. Stewart's remarkable career was highlighted by his gold medal win in the 10,000 meters at the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. He also had the honor of representing Great Britain at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Born Joseph Laughlin Stewart in Alexandria in 1943, Stewart balanced his athletic career with his profession as a dental mechanic. His dedication to both his sport and his work exemplified his commitment and resilience.

In 2018, Stewart was rightfully inducted into the Scottish Athletics' Hall of Fame. Scottish Athletics expressed their condolences, stating, "Everyone at scottishathletics and within our community sends our thoughts at this sad time to Lachie's family and his many friends across the sport."

Stewart's later years were marked by health challenges. In 2020, at the age of 77, he underwent a below-the-knee amputation due to complications from diabetes. Reflecting on his decision, Stewart shared, "I had an ulcer between my second and third toe and it didn't seem to heal too well. It quickly went from that to the doctor saying I can either live with the pain, which was unbelievable, or we can amputate below the knee. I said to him right away to just take the bottom of the leg off because I just couldn't stand the pain."

Despite this significant loss, Stewart remained positive and determined. He remarked, "Sport makes you more determined. I don't have any hang-ups about losing the leg." His attitude continues to inspire athletes and fans alike.

Stewart's legacy is one of perseverance, excellence, and an unwavering spirit. His contributions to Scottish athletics and his courageous battle with health issues will be remembered for generations to come.
