Exeter Chiefs' Head Coach Rob Hunter Departs After Historic Defeat

Exeter Chiefs' head coach Rob Hunter leaves the club following a record-breaking defeat against Gloucester, marking the end of his 13-year tenure.

Exeter Chiefs' head coach Rob Hunter has departed the club by mutual consent, just four days after being suspended alongside attack coach Ali Hepher. This decision follows a devastating 79-17 loss to Gloucester, the heaviest defeat in the club's history.

Hunter, who was promoted to head coach in March after Hepher's demotion, had only overseen four games in his new role. His tenure began with a 52-38 loss to Bristol, followed by a narrow 17-15 victory over Newcastle. Despite an encouraging 26-24 loss to Bath, the record-breaking defeat at Kingsholm proved to be the final straw.

Hunter's departure marks the end of a 13-year association with Exeter Chiefs, during which he served primarily as forwards coach. His contributions were instrumental in the club's two Premiership titles and the 2020 European Champions Cup victory.

Exeter chairman and chief executive Tony Rowe expressed his gratitude: "On behalf of everyone at Exeter Rugby Club, I would like to thank Rob for his dedication and the impact he has had during his time with us. We wish him every success in his future endeavors."

Director of rugby Rob Baxter, who will oversee coaching for the remainder of the season, added: "Rob has been an integral part of our coaching team across multiple seasons. I want to personally thank him for his hard work, loyalty, and the positive influence he has had on the squad."

Despite the challenges, Exeter Chiefs remain optimistic about the future, building on the strong foundations Hunter helped establish.
