Lionel Messi: The Final Signature in a Grandfather's Football Tribute

A football fan embarks on a heartfelt mission to collect signatures from the 2022 World Cup-winning Argentina team in memory of his late grandfather.

A devoted football fan, Gabriel Goldack, is on a unique mission to honor his late grandfather by collecting signatures from every member of the 2022 World Cup-winning Argentina team on a handmade replica of the tournament's trophy. This heartfelt tribute has brought him closer to his goal, with only four signatures remaining, including that of the legendary Lionel Messi.

The Journey Begins

Gabriel Goldack, 34, hails from Germany but was deeply influenced by his Argentinian grandfather's passion for football. After Argentina's triumph in the 2022 World Cup, Goldack vowed to complete this mission in memory of his grandfather, who passed away the year before and did not witness the historic win.

A Step Closer

Goldack recently achieved a significant milestone by securing the signature of Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez. After waiting for hours outside the club's training ground in Birmingham, Goldack's persistence paid off when Martínez, intrigued by his Argentinian accent and flag, engaged with him. The goalkeeper was moved by Goldack's story and encouraged him to continue his quest.

The Final Push

With 23 signatures already collected, including that of national team manager Lionel Scaloni, Goldack now focuses on the remaining four: Franco Armani, German Pezzella, Marcos Acuña, and, of course, Lionel Messi. Goldack plans to travel to Argentina to secure these signatures, with Messi being the ultimate goal. Despite sending letters and emails to Messi's club, Inter Miami, Goldack has yet to receive a response but remains hopeful.

A Lasting Tribute

Once completed, Goldack intends to display the signed replica trophy next to his grandfather's ashes. This tribute not only honors his grandfather's memory but also celebrates their shared love for football. The journey has been both rewarding and bittersweet for Goldack, who has enjoyed the adventure with his girlfriend, likening it to a Europe-wide treasure hunt.

Reflecting on the Mission

Goldack's mission is more than just collecting signatures; it's a way to keep his grandfather's memory alive through the sport they both loved. As he nears the end of his quest, Goldack feels a mix of excitement and apprehension, knowing that this unique journey has brought him closer to his grandfather in a way that words alone could never express.
