Golf Set to Shine at LA 2028: IGF Confident in Mixed Team Event Inclusion
The IGF expresses strong optimism about adding a groundbreaking mixed team golf event to the 2028 Olympics programme amid widespread athlete support.

Olympic Golf Expansion Gains Momentum
Golf officials are poised to make history at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, with the International Golf Federation (IGF) expressing strong confidence in their proposal for a revolutionary mixed-gender team event. The potential addition would create a thrilling bridge between the traditional men's and women's individual tournaments.
The Proposed Format
- Two-day competition featuring one male-female pair per nation
- Day 1: Foursomes (alternate shot) format
- Day 2: Fourball (best ball) format
- Scheduled between the individual tournaments at Riviera Country Club
Why This Matters
"We're hearing very positive feedback from LA28 organizers and broadcast partners like NBC," revealed IGF executive director Antony Scanlon. "The social, sporting, and financial merits are compelling - two extra competition days with minimal operational costs but significant revenue potential."
Star Power Behind the Proposal
Olympic champions including:
- Lydia Ko (New Zealand, 2024 gold medalist)
- Shane Lowry (Ireland, Paris 2024 flag bearer)
- Scottie Scheffler (USA, 2024 men's champion)
have enthusiastically endorsed the concept. The format specifically protects player workload while maximizing medal opportunities.
Schedule Implications
To accommodate the innovation:
- Men's 72-hole tournament moves to Wed-Sat of Week 1
- Mixed event occupies Sunday-Monday
- Women's tournament begins Wednesday of Week 2
The IGF anticipates final approval by the IOC on April 9, 2025.
