Jade Shekells Set for XV-a-Side Debut in England's Six Nations Opener Against Italy

Jade Shekels could make her XV-a-side debut as England faces Italy in the Six Nations opener. Discover key players and match details.

Jade Shekells, a prominent figure in the GB Sevens rugby team, is poised to make her XV-a-side international debut this Sunday. Named on the bench for England's Women's Six Nations opener against Italy, Shekells could bring her sevens expertise to the traditional format. The match is set to take place at the LNER Community Stadium in York, with kick-off at 15:00 GMT.

Shekells, 28, is one of four uncapped players in head coach John Mitchell's 37-woman squad. Also among the replacements is Exeter Chiefs scrum-half Flo Robinson, 23. Shekells' inclusion follows her participation in the GB squad at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she showcased her skills on the global stage. If brought on, she is expected to play in the centres.

Mia Venner, fresh from helping Gloucester-Hartpury secure a third consecutive Premiership Women's Rugby title, earns her second cap on the wing. Similarly, Loughborough Lightning lock Lilli Ives Campion will make her first international start. Helena Rowland, who has frequently operated in the centres, will begin at fly-half, adding versatility to the lineup.

Zoe Aldcroft captains the side, starting in the back row alongside Marlie Packer, whom she replaced as skipper in January. The team also sees the return of Claudia MacDonald, who has recovered from a second serious neck injury, marking her first England appearance since the WXV tournament in 2023.

England, aiming for a seventh consecutive Women's Six Nations title, will start as strong favourites against Italy, who finished fifth in the 2024 tournament. Last year's encounter ended in a 48-0 victory for England, despite an early red card for Sarah Beckett.

England Team to Face Italy:

  • Starters: Sing; Venner, Scarratt, Aitchison, MacDonald; Rowland, L Packer; Clifford, Cokayne, Muir, Galligan, Ives Campion, Aldcroft (capt), M Packer, Feaunati.
  • Replacements: Campbell, Botterman, Bern, Ward, Kabeya, Robinson, Shekells, Kildunne.

This match not only marks a significant moment for Shekells but also serves as a crucial opportunity for players to stake their claims for spots in Mitchell's squad ahead of the Rugby World Cup starting in August.
