Neil Gourley, the accomplished Scottish 1500m runner, has been named the captain of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for the 2025 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China. At 30 years old, Gourley brings a wealth of experience and a track record of success to the role.
Gourley recently secured a fourth-place finish at the European Indoors and was the runner-up in the 2023 event. In February, he set a new British indoor record for the 1,000m in Birmingham, showcasing his exceptional form and dedication to the sport.
Leading an 11-member team from March 21-23, Gourley expressed his gratitude and determination. "I am taking it as a compliment and really glad they have confidence in me in that respect," he said. "I hope I can bring a supportive atmosphere to the team."
Gourley emphasized the importance of mutual respect and camaraderie within the team. "I think being a smaller team we are all invested in what each other is doing at these championships so I hope I can inspire that environment at the very least and lead by example," he added. "The level is so high to even be here at the Worlds, so I wouldn't claim to have all this wisdom I can impart to my team-mates. But I do think there is such a great level of mutual respect across all of us in the events we do, and that respect for each other really comes through and hopefully we'll have a great championship."
The 2025 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing promise to be a thrilling event, with Gourley and his team ready to compete at the highest level.
