Dowson Vows Saints' Resilience in East Midlands Derby Despite Sleightholme Injury Blow
Northampton Saints director of rugby Phil Dowson pledges a fierce derby performance against Leicester despite losing winger Ollie Sleightholme to injury.

Injury Setback for Northampton Saints
Northampton Saints have been dealt a significant blow ahead of their crucial East Midlands derby against Leicester Tigers, with star winger Ollie Sleightholme ruled out due to an ankle injury sustained in training. The 24-year-old, who has made 10 appearances this season, underwent minor surgery and is unlikely to feature again this campaign. Sleightholme shared an optimistic update on Instagram, posting: "Back soon", but director of rugby Phil Dowson confirmed the England international faces an extended spell on the sidelines.
Dowson's Rallying Cry
Despite the setback, Dowson has promised Saints will "come out swinging" in Friday's high-stakes clash at cinch Stadium at Franklin's Gardens. The Saints, currently eighth in the Premiership table, trail fourth-placed Leicester by nine points in the race for playoff qualification. Dowson emphasized the importance of balancing squad rotation with the need for results, particularly with key players returning from Six Nations duty. "It's mandatory that those involved in the Six Nations get a week's rest, but we must manage our resources carefully for these critical fixtures," he told BBC Radio Northampton.
Recent Form and Fixture Pressure
Northampton's last outing against Leicester saw them fall to a 24-8 defeat at Welford Road in October, though they rebounded with a 31-12 victory in the Premiership Rugby Cup a month later. With Sale Sharks and a European Champions Cup tie against Clermont looming, Dowson acknowledged the importance of momentum: "Our backs are against the wall. We’ve a point to prove, and we’ll fight for every inch."
Emerging Talent and Squad Depth
The Saints have showcased their depth this season, with Henry Pollock and Curtis Langdon stepping up as Six Nations cover. Dowson praised the squad’s resilience but stressed the need for smart player management. "If anyone is flagging, they must communicate with staff—we won’t take unnecessary risks," he added.
Playoff Push
With just a handful of games left, Saints must bridge the gap to the top four. Dowson sees the derby as a catalyst: "Leicester are a benchmark—we’ll measure ourselves against the best."
