Republic of Ireland Bolsters Squad with Armstrong and Rising Stars for Crucial Nations League Play-off
Republic of Ireland recalls Sinclair Armstrong and introduces new talents for the decisive Nations League play-off against Bulgaria.

Sinclair Armstrong Returns to Republic of Ireland Squad
Sinclair Armstrong has been recalled to the Republic of Ireland squad as they prepare for a pivotal Nations League play-off against Bulgaria. This crucial match will determine their position in League B, with the first leg set for Plovdiv on March 20 and the return leg at Dublin's Aviva Stadium on March 23.
New Faces in the Squad
Heimir Hallgrimsson, the Republic of Ireland's head coach, has also included uncapped Watford duo Rocco Vata and James Abankwah, along with QPR defender Jimmy Dunne, in his 23-man squad. Armstrong, who earned his only cap in a defeat by the Netherlands in September 2023, has been in decent form for Bristol City this season, scoring three goals in 28 appearances.
Injury Comebacks and Omissions
Gavin Bazunu, on loan at Standard Liege from Southampton, returns to the squad as he aims to regain his top form after a 10-month injury layoff. Adam Idah and Robbie Brady, who missed the November window due to injuries, are also back. However, there is no place for Seamus Coleman, who is still recovering from a hamstring injury.
Hallgrimsson's Strategy
Hallgrimsson expressed his excitement about the inclusion of 19-year-old Rocco Vata, who has impressed with Watford this season, scoring three goals and providing three assists. "He can win games and give us something different," Hallgrimsson said, dismissing any notion that Vata was called up to fend off interest from Albania.
Squad Depth and Challenges
Despite the challenges posed by injuries, Hallgrimsson remains optimistic about the squad's depth, particularly in the right-back position. Matt Doherty, Jake O'Brien, and Jimmy Dunne provide strong options, even in the absence of Coleman.
