Denis Law: The Aberdeen Legend Immortalized in Street Art

Explore the life and legacy of Denis Law, immortalized in a stunning mural in his hometown of Aberdeen, celebrating his illustrious football career and enduring impact on the sport.

As the sun casts its golden hues over Aberdeen, a towering high-rise in the Printfield area is transforming into a canvas of football history. Jerome Davenport, a master of street art, is meticulously crafting a mural that pays homage to Denis Law, a true icon of the beautiful game.

Denis Law, affectionately known as “The Lawman,” was a force to be reckoned with during his 11-year tenure at Manchester United. Scoring 237 goals in 404 appearances, he remains the third-highest scorer in the club's storied history, trailing only Wayne Rooney and Bobby Charlton. His legacy extends beyond club football, as he also holds the joint record for the most goals scored for Scotland, alongside Kenny Dalglish.

Born and raised in Aberdeen, Law’s journey from the Granite City to the hallowed grounds of Old Trafford is a testament to his relentless dedication and skill. His 55 appearances for the national team and 30 goals cemented his place as one of Scotland’s greatest footballers. Sadly, Law passed away in January 2024 at the age of 84, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia.

In 2021, the city of Aberdeen honored Law with a 4.5-tonne bronze statue, unveiled by his friend and fellow legend, Sir Alex Ferguson. The statue, located off Broad Street, stands as a testament to his enduring legacy. Now, Jerome Davenport’s mural adds another layer to the city’s tribute, with the artwork expected to be completed later this month.

Law’s influence transcends generations. As Sir Alex Ferguson once said, ‘Denis Law was not just a footballer; he was a hero of a generation.’ From his iconic partnerships with Bobby Charlton and George Best to his unwavering spirit on and off the pitch, Law’s story continues to inspire.

This mural is not just a piece of art; it’s a celebration of a man who gave everything to the sport he loved. As the artwork takes its final shape, it serves as a reminder of the indelible mark Denis Law left on football and the hearts of fans worldwide.
