Richard Whitehead: The Marathon Legend's Journey to 100 Marathons and Beyond

Discover Richard Whitehead's inspiring journey as he prepares to complete his 100th marathon, overcoming challenges and setting records in disability sports.

When Richard Whitehead stood at the starting line of his first marathon in New York over two decades ago, he was about to embark on a journey he never thought possible – running. Born without the lower part of his legs, Richard's determination and resilience have turned him into a global sports icon.

From the Big Apple to Global Stardom

Richard Whitehead, often referred to as 'Britain's Bladerunner', has not only won two Paralympic gold medals but also numerous world titles. His journey began in New York in 2004, and it is at the same race 21 years later that he is now looking to complete his 100th marathon.

The Challenge of a Lifetime

"Every marathon is up and down, very emotional. But that final mile, back to where I completed that first marathon as someone who never thought they would be able to run, will be incredible," Whitehead shared with BBC East Midlands Today.

Breaking Barriers and Setting Records

Richard's story is not just about running; it's about breaking barriers. With two prosthetics, he has redefined what is possible in disability sports. He spent a decade challenging for, and often winning, the biggest prizes in sprint events after being told his classification wouldn't feature in long-distance events at the 2012 Paralympics.

The Road to 100 Marathons

At 48, Richard continues to push boundaries. He has already completed three marathons in 2025, bringing his total to 83. His packed schedule includes races across the globe, each significant for his career and personal journey.

Support and Research

Preparations for his monumental challenge have led Richard to Loughborough University's Peter Harrison Centre, which specializes in disability sports research. Every aspect of his training has been meticulously logged and studied to ensure peak performance.

Inspiration Beyond the Finish Line

Richard's journey is a testament to the power of belief and determination. "Hopefully it challenges that anything is possible in life. If you believe you can achieve massive things," he said.
