Benni McCarthy’s Bold Vision: Leading Kenya to 2026 World Cup Glory
Benni McCarthy, Kenya’s new head coach, aims to guide the Harambee Stars to their first World Cup in 2026. Discover his ambitious plans and vision for Kenyan football.

Benni McCarthy Takes Charge of Kenya’s Football Future
Benni McCarthy, the newly appointed head coach of Kenya’s national football team, has set his sights on an ambitious goal: leading the Harambee Stars to their first-ever World Cup in 2026. With a two-year contract that extends to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, McCarthy brings a wealth of experience and a winning mentality to the role.
A Vision of World Cup Success
McCarthy, a former South African international and the nation’s all-time top scorer, believes Kenya has the potential to surprise the football world.
"Participating in the World Cup is one of the most special feelings in the world, and I want to give that to Kenya," he said in an interview with BBC Sport Africa. "With the right mindset, dedication, and willingness to learn, we can achieve something extraordinary."
Kenya currently sits fourth in their World Cup qualifying group with five points from four games, five points behind leaders Ivory Coast. Only the group winners qualify automatically, with the best runners-up entering a playoff.
A Proven Track Record
McCarthy’s football journey is storied. As a player, he achieved success in Europe, winning titles with Ajax and Porto, including the 2004 UEFA Champions League under José Mourinho. He also made his mark in the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers and West Ham before returning to South Africa with Orlando Pirates.
After retiring, McCarthy transitioned into coaching, working with Cape Town City and AmaZulu in South Africa. Most recently, he was part of Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff at Manchester United, where he honed his skills at one of the world’s biggest clubs.
"Working at Manchester United was incredible," McCarthy shared. "Now, I’m ready to take on the challenge of leading Kenya and giving back to African football."
Rebuilding Kenyan Football
Kenya’s football landscape has faced challenges, including a recent suspension from international competitions due to administrative issues. However, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is now under new leadership, with former Inter Milan midfielder McDonald Mariga serving as vice president.
McCarthy’s appointment signals a fresh start for Kenyan football. He has promised a hard-working, passionate team that reflects the spirit of the Kenyan people.
"Kenyan people are known for their loyalty and hard work," McCarthy explained. "I want the national team to embody those values. Every player must give their all when they wear the Kenyan shirt."
What’s Next for Kenya?
McCarthy’s first test will be Kenya’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against The Gambia and Gabon this month. With his leadership, the Harambee Stars aim to climb the group standings and keep their World Cup dreams alive.
Kenya’s fans are hopeful that McCarthy’s winning mentality and tactical expertise can transform their national team into a force to be reckoned with on the continent and beyond.
