From Prison to the Open: Ryan Peake's Remarkable Golf Comeback Story

Former motorcycle gang member Ryan Peake qualifies for the Open Championship after winning the New Zealand Open, showcasing his inspiring golf journey.

Former Australian motorcycle gang member and convict Ryan Peake has achieved a remarkable milestone by qualifying for the Open Championship at Portrush, following his victory at the New Zealand Open. This victory is a testament to his incredible turnaround from a troubled past to a promising golf career.

A Troubled Past

At 21, Peake was a member of the outlawed motorcycle gang, The Rebels, and was sentenced to five years in prison for a serious assault. However, golf became his redemption. 'Focusing on golf has turned my life around,' says Peake. After his release, he was contacted by coach Ritchie Smith, who encouraged him to return to the sport.

The Road to the Open

Peake’s journey to the New Zealand Open was fraught with challenges. His entry to New Zealand was delayed by immigration officials, and he only arrived on Tuesday, just a day before the tournament's opening round. Despite these hurdles, Peake emerged victorious by a single shot, earning him Aus$201,600 and a spot in the Open Championship.

The Winning Moment

Peake’s win was emotional, as he celebrated with family and friends. 'I’m pretty lost for words at the moment; this is life-changing,' he said. 'It’s one hell of a story, one hell of a moment.' His victory was fueled by sheer belief and determination. 'I always knew I could do it; it was just a matter of time when I was going to do it.'

Looking Ahead

Peake’s success has earned him a spot on the Asian Tour, marking a new chapter in his career. 'This is what I do now. I want to be here and just play golf,' he said, reflecting on his journey. Peake finished one shot ahead of competitors Jack Thompson, Ian Snyman, and Kazuki Higa, solidifying his place in golf history.
