High-Stakes Showdown: Physicality Key to Quins' Semi-Final Success Against Saracens

Harlequins captain Jade Konkel emphasizes the crucial role of physicality as they prepare to face Saracens in the PWR semi-final.

Harlequins captain Jade Konkel is eagerly anticipating the next chapter in their fierce cross-town rivalry with Saracens as the two London teams clash in the upcoming Premiership Women's Rugby (PWR) semi-final. This matchup marks the first play-offs meeting between the sides since Saracens triumphed in the 2022 semi-final.

Konkel, who has been with Harlequins since 2018, highlighted the significance of the rivalry. "It has been a great rivalry, ever since I joined the Premiership back in 2018," said the Scotland number eight. "It makes it that little bit more special because you know it is going to be two teams properly going after it."

Both teams have proven their mettle in the regular season, each securing victories on their opponent's home turf. Saracens' decisive 33-10 win at the Stoop was a pivotal moment in their season, contributing to a five-match winning streak that secured them a second-place finish and home advantage for the semi-final.

Konkel acknowledged the physical challenge that Saracens will pose. "We know Sarries are a physical side," she added. "They will look to bring that physicality to life at the weekend, so it is how we match that. That physicality element is going to be make or break."

With the final set to be held at the StoneX Stadium, Saracens also have the added incentive of potential home advantage throughout the playoffs. Despite this, Quins are determined to rise to the occasion and disrupt their rivals' path to the title.

Alex Austerberry, Saracens' coach, emphasized the importance of focusing on the present rather than past setbacks. "If you get hung up on incidents and one experience, that is quite dangerous," he said. "We have learned from last season's semi-final defeat and are fully focused on the game against Quins."

As the PWR semi-final approaches, both teams are gearing up for what promises to be an intense and physical encounter.
