UK Indoor Championships Delayed: Utilita Arena Evacuation Sparks Mid-Race Drama
The UK Indoor Championships faced an unexpected delay as the Utilita Arena was evacuated due to a nearby fire. Olympic stars Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Georgia Hunter Bell continue their quest for British titles.

The UK Athletics Indoor Championships at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham experienced an unforeseen disruption when the venue was evacuated on Saturday morning. The event, scheduled to showcase some of Britain's top athletes, was delayed by 90 minutes due to a fire in a nearby flat.
West Midlands Fire Service confirmed that crews were called to the scene after a cooker caught fire. Katharine Merry, Olympic bronze medallist and commentator, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the situation: "Not made it into the Utilita Arena yet. It's been fully evacuated due to a fire. Fire brigade here and smoke coming from the top floor."
UK Athletics assured spectators via social media that the venue would open shortly, albeit with some delay. The championships, which run over two days, are being broadcast live on the BBC, featuring prominent athletes like Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Georgia Hunter Bell.
Johnson-Thompson, who recently secured a heptathlon silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, is set to compete in the 60m hurdles and shot put events. Meanwhile, Hunter Bell aims to defend her British indoor 1500m title, adding to her Olympic bronze medal accolades.
The incident, though disruptive, did not dampen the spirit of the event, with both athletes and fans eagerly anticipating the thrilling competitions ahead.
