South Korean Football Star Hwang Ui-jo Receives Suspended Sentence for Illicit Filming
South Korean footballer Hwang Ui-jo has been given a suspended one-year jail term for illegally filming intimate encounters, highlighting ongoing issues with hidden cameras in South Korea.

South Korean national team player and former Nottingham Forest striker, Hwang Ui-jo, has been handed a suspended one-year jail term for illegally filming his sexual encounters with a woman. The 32-year-old, who currently plays for Turkish club Alanyaspor, faced significant legal and public scrutiny over the incident, which came to light in June 2023 when his sister-in-law shared the videos on social media in an attempt to blackmail him. She has since been sentenced to three years in prison.
The Seoul court emphasized the serious social harm caused by illegal filming, stating that it is necessary to impose strict punishment. However, the court also noted Hwang's remorse and the fact that the videos were disseminated by a third party. Hwang had initially denied the charges but pleaded guilty in October 2023.
This case is part of a broader issue in South Korea, where the use of hidden cameras to secretly film women has become a widespread problem. Over the past decade, thousands of individuals have been arrested for similar offenses, sparking widespread fear and anger among women across the country.
Hwang, who was suspended from the national team in 2023, expressed deep regret for his actions during his first court appearance last December. The incident has cast a shadow over his career, raising questions about the ethical responsibilities of public figures.
