Trump's Influence on PGA-LIV Golf Unity: McIlroy's Insight
Rory McIlroy discusses Donald Trump's pivotal role in bridging the gap between PGA Tour and LIV Golf, emphasizing the need for golf unification.

Rory McIlroy has revealed that Donald Trump plays a significant role in the ongoing negotiations between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. Speaking ahead of the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines, McIlroy shared insights from his recent golf outing with the former US President.
McIlroy highlighted that Trump is not a fan of LIV's 54-hole format, a sentiment he expressed during their game. 'He was like, 'yeah, but it doesn't mean that I like it',' McIlroy recounted, indicating Trump's alignment with the PGA Tour.
Trump's Strategic Role
McIlroy pointed out Trump's unique position, given his direct access to key figures in the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), which finances LIV Golf. 'He has direct access to Yasir [Al-Rumayyan, governor of the PIF]'s boss [Mohammed bin Salman]. Not many people have that,' McIlroy stated, underlining Trump's potential to influence the talks positively.
A Call for Unity
McIlroy, who has been vocal in his opposition to LIV, now advocates for the sport's unification. 'Whether you stayed on the PGA Tour or left, we have all benefited from this,' he said, pointing out the increased prize funds and global attention the rivalry has brought to the sport.
Moving Forward
'Everyone's just got to get over it and we all have to say 'okay, this is the starting point and we move forward',' McIlroy urged, emphasizing the need for the golf community to focus on the future rather than past disagreements.
