Wales Rugby Shake-Up: Howley Exits as Sherratt Revamps Squad for Six Nations Finale
Rob Howley steps down from Wales' coaching staff as Matt Sherratt takes interim charge, recalling three players for the remaining Six Nations matches.

In a significant shift within the Welsh rugby setup, Rob Howley, the long-standing assistant coach, has departed from his role. This move comes as Matt Sherratt, the interim head coach, undertakes a strategic overhaul of both the squad and coaching staff for the concluding games of the 2024 Six Nations. Sherratt's appointment follows the departure of Warren Gatland, who left after a challenging streak of 14 consecutive Test defeats.
Coaching Changes
Howley, who had recently returned to the coaching staff after a four-year hiatus, will retain his contract with the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) despite not participating in the remaining Six Nations fixtures. His exit marks the end of an era under Gatland's leadership, as both have been pivotal figures in Welsh rugby.
Squad Adjustments
Sherratt has made notable changes to the squad, recalling three players from his tenure at Cardiff Rugby: fly-halves Jarrod Evans and Gareth Anscombe, and centre Max Llewellyn. These inclusions aim to bolster the team's depth, especially following injuries to key players like Liam Williams and Owen Watkin.
Evans and Anscombe's return is particularly crucial as Wales faces a shortage in the fly-half position. Currently, Dan Edwards from the Ospreys is the sole specialist fly-half in the squad, with Ben Thomas being converted from his usual position of centre at Cardiff.
The upcoming matches will serve as a litmus test for Sherratt's leadership and the team's resilience amidst recent setbacks.
