The Comeback Kid: Dick Vitale's Triumphant Return to College Basketball

Dick Vitale makes an emotional comeback to the court after overcoming serious health challenges, ready to share his passion for the game.

In an exhilarating twist that embodies the spirit of resilience in sports, Dick Vitale is back in the college basketball broadcast booth! This Saturday marks a monumental occasion as he returns to the courtside for the highly anticipated matchup between Duke and Clemson, alongside his esteemed colleagues, Dave O'Brien and Cory Alexander.

"Oh, baby! This moment, this opportunity, this incredible blessing -- it means everything to me!"

With a heart full of gratitude and tears of joy, Vitale recalls his tumultuous journey over the past few years, which has tested his limits like never before. Having bravely confronted four battles against various types of cancer, including melanoma and lymphoma, he faced significant hurdles, enduring multiple surgeries, an astonishing 65 radiation treatments, and lengthy periods without his voice. This journey felt like an emotional rollercoaster, full of highs and lows, but through it all, one thing kept him going: the unwavering support from his family and fans.

Vitale expresses heartfelt thanks to his amazing wife Lorraine, his daughters Terri and Sherri, and his extended family, who provided emotional strength during his toughest moments. His words resonate with warmth and appreciation for his ESPN family, particularly CEO Jimmy Pitaro and colleagues who stood by him for over four decades, reinforcing that he was never alone in this fight.

As hope blossomed, the monumental moment arrived when his oncologist, Dr. Rick Brown, proclaimed, "You are cancer-free!" This news was akin to winning a championship in the world of sports. After enduring five major surgeries on his vocal cords, Dr. Steven Zeitels finally cleared him to return to the profession he loves dearly — talking basketball.

Just when it seemed that the stars were aligning for his comeback during the Duke-Wake Forest match, Vitale faced another setback from an unfortunate accident at home. However, perseverance paid off as doctors eventually cleared him for his exciting return.

The last game he called was the National Championship matchup on April 3, 2023. Now, a year later, he’s ecstatic to reunite with the game he adores.
"This is not just a return; it’s a victory! Just being here is a win in itself. This feels like my national championship for 2025!"

Get ready for an unforgettable experience this Saturday, as the voice of college basketball, Dick Vitale, brings his passion and energy back to the court. His journey is a vivid reminder of the strength and spirit that sports embody.

See you courtside, baby!
