Anthony Richardson's Comeback: Colts QB Returns to Practice After Finger Injury
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson returns to practice following a dislocated pinkie injury, showcasing resilience and determination in his recovery.

WESTFIELD, Ind. -- Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. made a significant return to practice on Saturday, just two days after sustaining a dislocated right pinkie during the Colts' preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens. This quick comeback highlights Richardson's resilience and commitment to his team.
During the practice, Richardson took his usual workload of reps, focusing primarily on red zone work. However, he wasn't at his best, completing just 1 of 6 attempts in the red zone snaps during an abbreviated session. This performance raises questions about whether the tape he wore on his injured finger affected his throwing mechanics.
Quarterbacks coach Cam Turner commented on Richardson's condition, stating, "I don't think it's a big deal. He looked like he was gripping it normally, [but] anytime you put something on your throwing hand, it's a little different, uncomfortable. But it didn't look any different to me."
The injury occurred during the first quarter of Thursday's game when Baltimore Ravens linebacker David Ojabo was unblocked and sacked Richardson forcefully. The impact left the smallest finger on Richardson's throwing hand bent at an outward angle as he ran off the field. The team's medical staff quickly popped the joint back into place, and Richardson began testing his ability to grip a football, hoping to return to the game.
Despite his efforts, coach Shane Steichen decided to rule him out of the game, with veteran Daniel Jones finishing the first half before yielding to rookie Riley Leonard in the second half.
After the game, Richardson described the finger as "tender," adding, "it'll be a little bit more so in the morning. But I'll be good." This positive outlook is crucial as Richardson and Jones are in a battle for the starting QB spot.
The Colts had a scheduled day off on Friday before returning to training camp on Saturday, allowing Richardson some time to recover before resuming practice. His determination to return quickly from injury not only demonstrates his physical toughness but also his mental fortitude, qualities that are essential for a starting quarterback in the NFL.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Richardson to see how he manages his recovery and competes for the starting position. His ability to overcome adversity will be a key factor in the Colts' success this season.
