Carson Vinson: The Trailblazing HBCU Star Making Waves in the NFL

Carson Vinson, the sole HBCU player drafted in 2025, shares his journey from Alabama A&M to the Baltimore Ravens, highlighting his commitment to his roots and the challenges faced by HBCU athletes.

Carson Vinson's Journey from HBCU to the NFL

Carson Vinson, a standout offensive tackle from Alabama A&M, made history as the only player from a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to be selected in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Baltimore Ravens picked him in the fifth round, marking a significant milestone for HBCU athletes.

Commitment to HBCU Roots

Despite the allure of transferring to larger programs, Vinson chose to stay loyal to Alabama A&M, where he started all four seasons. His decision to remain at an HBCU speaks volumes about his character and dedication. "He could have left us and chased the money," said Markus Lawrence, Vinson's former coach. "He instead chased the commitment and the loyalty."

Overcoming Challenges

Vinson's path to the NFL was not without obstacles. He faced skepticism about his toughness early in his college career. However, a standout performance during his first college practice silenced the doubters. "He killed him," Lawrence recalled. "He stood over top of him and he was talking. I looked over at Coach Taylor and said, 'Hey, that whole soft deal ... scratch it.'"

Impressive Combine Performance

Vinson's performance at the NFL Combine further solidified his draft stock. He finished among the top 15 offensive linemen in the 40-yard dash (5.2 seconds), the broad jump (9 feet, 3 inches), and the three-cone drill (7.51 seconds). His wingspan, measured at 84⅜ inches, is comparable to NBA star LeBron James.

A New Chapter with the Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens saw potential in Vinson, impressed by his size, strength, and performance at the Senior Bowl. Ravens offensive line coach George Warhop noted, "He wasn't perfect, but he competed. Once I saw that and how God made him -- and there's not that many guys like that -- I was like, 'If we have a chance, we need to draft him.'"

Inspiring the Next Generation

Vinson hopes his success will pave the way for more HBCU players to reach the NFL. He emphasizes the importance of staying true to oneself and capitalizing on opportunities. "Being from an HBCU, it is so special," Vinson said. "We have our rivalries, but after we get past it, we're all one big family."

Looking Ahead

As Vinson begins his NFL journey with the Ravens, he remains grounded in his HBCU roots. He draws inspiration from Alabama A&M alumni like Hall of Fame wide receiver John Stallworth and five-time Pro Bowl defensive end Robert Mathis. "It's really important not only just to give money -- anybody can give a check -- but it's really important to be there and be hands-on," Vinson added.

Carson Vinson's story is a testament to perseverance, loyalty, and the enduring spirit of HBCU athletes. His journey from Alabama A&M to the NFL serves as an inspiration to aspiring players everywhere.
