FARMINGTON, Utah -- The Big Sky Conference is set to expand its roster with the inclusion of Southern Utah and Utah Tech as full members starting with the 2026-27 academic year. This strategic move was officially announced on Wednesday, marking a significant step in the conference's ongoing evolution.

Strengthening the Conference

Big Sky commissioner Tom Wistrcill expressed his enthusiasm about the new additions. "The time is right for the Big Sky to bring in Utah Tech and to bring back Southern Utah," Wistrcill stated. "These two universities, located within our geographic footprint in the western United States, will bolster the long-term stability and success of our league."

Impact on the Western Athletic Conference

The departure of Southern Utah and Utah Tech from the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) will reduce the WAC to five members. This follows the earlier exits of Seattle, Grand Canyon, and Utah Valley. Both institutions will continue to compete in the WAC until their transition to the Big Sky.

Affiliate Members

In addition to its full members, the Big Sky Conference also includes two football affiliate members, Cal Poly and UC Davis. Furthermore, Francis Marion will join as a men's golf affiliate starting July 1, adding another layer of diversity to the conference's athletic offerings.

Looking Ahead

With these additions, the Big Sky Conference will have 11 full members, reinforcing its position as a competitive and stable league in NCAA athletics. The integration of Southern Utah and Utah Tech is expected to bring fresh rivalries and heightened competition, benefiting all member institutions.
