Oscar Piastri Aims for Historic Sixth Win in Canadian Grand Prix

Oscar Piastri is on the verge of making history as the only Australian to win six or more races in a single Formula 1 season. With five wins already under his belt, the McLaren driver is focused on even greater achievements.

Oscar Piastri could make history this Sunday at the Canadian Grand Prix by becoming the only Australian to win six or more races in a single Formula 1 season. At just 24 years old, Piastri has already secured five victories in the first nine races of the season, putting him in a prime position to chase even greater milestones.

Currently leading the championship by 10 points over his McLaren teammate Lando Norris, Piastri has been on the podium in the last eight races. His remarkable consistency and calm demeanor have made him a formidable contender on the track.

Reflecting on his achievements, Piastri said, "It's a nice stat to have, matching the maximum season haul of 1980 champion Alan Jones and the late triple title-winner Jack Brabham. But I'd be happier with the stat of joining them as world champion. To have five wins in nine races is beyond what I expected really, even with a very competitive car."

Piastri also acknowledged that there have been moments he wished he could redo, but his focus remains on winning more races and fighting for the championship. "Whilst those stats are cool, that's ultimately not why I'm here. I'm here to try and win even more races and fight for a championship. So I think there's some cooler statistics to come hopefully," he added.

Looking ahead to the Canadian Grand Prix, Piastri expects the race to be a continuation of the season's trends, with McLaren and Red Bull's reigning champion Max Verstappen being the main competitors. "Max will probably be competitive again. This was a very competitive race for Mercedes last year and I expect them to be quick again here," he said.

Piastri also noted the unpredictability of the competition, especially in qualifying. "But you never quite know whether that's going to be matching us or challenging in qualifying especially, or a tenth or two back. Hopefully it's not a tenth or two ahead but you just never quite know exactly where the challenge is going to come from."

Last year, Piastri qualified fourth in Canada, with Norris starting third. However, Piastri finished fifth while Norris came in second behind Verstappen. "Somewhat ironically the races that were pretty bad for me last year have been the best so far this year, and some of the ones that were good last year haven't been great," Piastri remarked.

Despite the challenges, Piastri remains confident. "So we'll see how we go but I'm expecting it to be a good weekend ... I've been very comfortable with the car the whole year and I feel like I'm in a good place at the moment so I'm expecting it to be strong."

As the Canadian Grand Prix approaches, all eyes will be on Piastri as he aims to add another victory to his already impressive season and edge closer to his ultimate goal of becoming a world champion.
